Downton Abbey & The Crown: How to Plan an England Trip Inspired by the Shows

If Downton Abbey or The Crown has ever made you want to wander through an English country house, drink tea somewhere unnecessarily beautiful or spend a few days pretending you belong on a grand estate, this is a very easy trip to turn into real life.

The interesting part is that the places you see on screen are a mix of real historic sites and stand-ins. That makes England perfect for this kind of trip because even when a house was pretending to be somewhere else, it is usually worth visiting on its own.

For Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle is the big one

Highclere Castle is the real house used as Downton Abbey, and for fans it is the obvious centerpiece of the trip.

Then there is Bampton in Oxfordshire, where streets and buildings became the fictional village of Downton. The nice thing is that both fit naturally into a broader England itinerary rather than requiring an entire vacation built around television locations.

One thing I would plan around carefully is access. Stately homes and castles do not all operate like museums that are open every day of the year. Seasonal schedules, private events and ticketed dates matter, especially when one particular property is the reason you are going.

The Crown works a little differently

The Crown used historic houses, cathedrals and estates all over Britain to stand in for royal residences.

That means you can visit places that look familiar from the show without necessarily visiting the real palace they were portraying.

Knebworth House has stood in for Balmoral. Belvoir Castle was used for Windsor Castle interiors. Winchester Cathedral doubled for St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich helped recreate Buckingham Palace.

For me, that actually makes the trip more interesting. You can mix filming locations with the real royal places and see both the television version and the history behind it.

This is where a private driver can make a lot of sense

London itself is easy without a car. Once you start trying to connect country estates, villages and filming locations, the logistics change.

A private driver gives you much more flexibility than trying to line up trains, taxis and attraction hours across several counties, especially if the screen locations are important enough that you do not want to lose half a day getting from one to the next.

What if you do not want a fully themed trip?

I probably would not make most people’s entire England vacation about one television show anyway.

A couple of filming locations can be really fun alongside London, Windsor, Bath, the Cotswolds, Oxford or whatever else brought you to England.

Downton Abbey or The Crown?

If you love Downton Abbey, I would lean into the country-house side of England: estates, villages, gardens, afternoon tea and a slower route outside London.

If The Crown is the inspiration, London and royal history naturally become a bigger part of the trip, with stately homes and filming stand-ins worked around them.

If you love both, there is no reason to choose. The locations overlap well enough that a custom route can mix royal London, English countryside and the places you recognize from both shows.

The show can be the excuse, not the whole itinerary

That is really the sweet spot for this kind of travel.

You get the fun of standing somewhere you recognize from the screen, but you also come home having actually seen England.
