Okinawa & Southern Japan: Kyoto to Ishigaki
A 10-day active Japan journey from Kyoto to Okinawa and Ishigaki with forest hikes, sea kayaking, island cycling and time in the Ryukyu Islands.
Why This Trip Stands Out
This 10-day active Japan trip is completely different from a first-time Tokyo-Kyoto circuit. It begins with hiking around Kyoto, then flies south into Okinawa for forest trails, sea kayaking, island cycling and time in the subtropical Ryukyu Islands.
- Hike from Kurama to Kibune and explore Fushimi Inari in Kyoto.
- Fly south to Okinawa and spend time in remote Yanbaru National Park.
- Sea kayak along the coast after a guided forest trek.
- Travel onward to Ishigaki for a traditional Okinawan sailing experience.
- Explore Iriomote by mangrove kayak and Taketomi by bicycle.
Sample Itinerary
Days 1–3 | Kyoto
Begin in Kyoto with a welcome evening, a forest hike between Kurama and Kibune and time on the trails around Fushimi Inari.
Days 4–5 | Okinawa & Yanbaru National Park
Fly to Okinawa and continue north into Yanbaru National Park. Hike a forest trail, then switch landscapes for a guided sea-kayaking excursion along the coast.
Days 6–7 | Ishigaki
Travel farther south to Ishigaki and experience Okinawan island culture, including time on the water aboard a traditional small sailing boat.
Days 8–10 | Iriomote, Taketomi & Ishigaki
Explore Iriomote’s mangroves by kayak and on foot, then spend time cycling around Taketomi before returning to Ishigaki, where the trip ends.
