If Outlander is what made you start looking at Scotland, you are in luck. A surprising number of the places that look fictional on screen are real castles, villages, harbors and country estates you can actually visit.
The part I would not do is build the entire vacation around racing from one filming location to the next. Scotland gives you too much else along the way.
The better trip is to use Outlander as the starting point, then let Edinburgh, the Highlands, castles, whisky country and the scenery fill in the rest.
Some of the best Outlander locations are easier to reach than you might think
A lot of the recognizable filming happened around central Scotland, which means you do not have to disappear into the far Highlands for a week just to see places from the show.
Culross became Cranesmuir. Falkland stood in for 1940s Inverness. Doune Castle became Castle Leoch. Blackness Castle was used as Fort William, and Midhope Castle is instantly recognizable to fans as Lallybroch.
Edinburgh is useful as a starting point because several locations can be reached from the city, and Edinburgh itself deserves time instead of being treated as somewhere you only sleep between day trips.
You can do this as a day tour, but I like it better as part of Scotland
If you only have a few days, an Outlander filming-location day from Edinburgh can make a lot of sense. Someone else handles the driving, you see several recognizable places and you are back in the city that evening.
With more time, I would rather spread the experience out.
That is where a self-drive can be really fun. You can spend time in Culross or Falkland without watching the clock, stop somewhere because it looks good, then continue into the Highlands instead of returning to Edinburgh every night.
I have a 10-day Outlander-inspired Scotland self-drive that does exactly that. It uses the show as the thread through the trip, but still gives you Edinburgh, Highland scenery, Loch Lomond, whisky country and Glasgow.
Not every filming location is open every day
This is one of the details that matters when you start turning the wish list into an actual route.
Some castles and estates have seasonal hours, events or restricted access. Midhope Castle, for example, sits on a working estate and access can change. That is why I would not build a whole day around one location without checking what is actually open for your dates.
The good news is that Scotland has enough Outlander locations that we can usually work around it without the trip falling apart.
What if not everyone traveling is an Outlander fan?
This is probably easier than you think.
Culross is still a beautifully preserved historic village. Doune and Blackness are real castles with histories that have nothing to do with television. The Highlands are the Highlands whether you know who Jamie Fraser is or not.
That is another reason I like mixing the filming locations into a broader Scotland itinerary. One person gets the moment of recognizing a place from the show, and everybody else is still visiting somewhere worth seeing.
How much time would I give Scotland?
A week can give you a really good first Scotland trip. Around 9 or 10 days gives you much more room to combine Edinburgh, several filming locations and the Highlands without feeling like every day is a long drive.

You do not need to copy Claire and Jamie’s route
That is the fun part about planning travel around a show. You can go as deep into the filming locations as you want.
Maybe you want the full Outlander trip with castles and villages you recognize immediately. Maybe the show simply made you want to see Scotland, and one or two locations would be enough.
Both work.
If Scotland is calling, use the show as inspiration and build the vacation around the places you actually want to experience. The itineraries on my site are starting points, and I can customize the trip from there.
